Pecan Promotion - Teacher Resources

This section will help teachers present Pecans in their classrooms with various activities, songs, and projects.

I'm A Little Hickory Nut

Attention Getter
This is a good tool to use throughout your stay in the classroom to see who is paying attention and can remember the rhythm.

I'm a little hickory nut
People like to eat me up!

(finger over mouth)

I'm a nut
(Clap,Clap)

I'm a nut
(Clap,Clap)

I'm a nut, I'm a nut, I'm a nut
(clap,clap)

Go through the exercise and teach the song first and when you expect the children to clap. Why did I use hickory nut instead of pecan? The pecan is a kind of hickory nut native to the U.S.

Finger Play

This is a good song to get the children interactive with you.

I'm a little hickory nut
(thumb and index finger together to make a circle)

People like to eat me up!
(fingers and thumb together in a clapping motion)

I'm a nut
(clap,clap)

I'm a nut
(clap,clap)

I'm a nut, I'm a nut, I'm a nut
(clap, clap)

Give children a piece of paper and instruct them to write their name on it. Also place any adult's name in the bag. Take a paper bag and collect all the names. Show them what a pecan looks like by holding it up in the room. Tell them they are going to act like squirrels and eash one will get a chance to hold the pecan. First they have to learn to sing as ong and act like a squirrel. You demonstrate by singing and acting out the song. Ask the wjole class to do it with you next. Then one by one pull out a child's name and instruct the whole class to sing the song for that particular student to act out.
